Roland Halpern has always had a passion for animals from an early age. He has frequently volunteered with animal welfare organizations including being the past Colorado faith outreach coordinator for HSUS. Roland was ordained as an animal chaplain by the Emerson Theological Institute and often works with those who have suffered the loss of a companion. Roland was the past president and current board member of the Colorado Council of Churches where he works to incorporate animal compassion and welfare into the agendas of member congregations. Although retired, Roland spends most of his time volunteering for Colorado Voters for Animals, which involves interacting with the Colorado legislature, working with lawmakers to help advance animal-friendly laws. This has included legislation banning wild animal performances in circuses, increasing penalties for animal cruelty, and allowing citizens to enter locked vehicles to rescue dogs or cats in distress, to name a few. Roland has also assisted in getting several city councils to ban pet stores from selling dogs or cats that come from commercial breeders (puppy mills). A board member of Metro Denver Crime Stoppers, Roland monitors tips that come in regarding animal cruelty and looks for trends that may form the basis for future legislative efforts. He also chairs the Ethical Eating and Animal Welfare Task Force at the First Universalist Church of Denver, informing others about the UUA’s Statement of Conscience on Ethical Eating and making sure plant-based options are available at church sponsored meals.
