Elizabeth DeCoux joined the Board of UU Animal Ministry in 2025. She has felt a deep connection to animals since she was a very young girl; one especially powerful memory comes from the age of three, when her mother told her it was important to pet the family dog very gently and taught her how. In her twenties, Elizabeth visited a bookstore and bought a magazine titled Animals’ Voice. Reading that magazine was a life-changing experience for her, eventually leading her to a vegan lifestyle based on her conviction that humans should not exploit animals.
After practicing law for a number of years, Elizabeth shifted to a career as a law school professor, which gave her the opportunity to teach animal rights law for more than twenty years. Her publications and speaking engagements as a legal academic also focused on animal rights law.
Elizabeth is retired and lives in Jacksonville, Florida, with her wife, Diana. They enjoy spending time with their three furry children. Elizabeth is an active member of Buckman Bridge Unitarian Universalist Church.
