Embracing Interdependence
A gathering for 6-12 people in the style of covenant groups and small group ministry
Welcome to UU Animal Ministry’s (UUAM) discussion guide on the new Article II Interdependence value and covenant statement adopted at the 2024 Unitarian Universalist (UU) General Assembly. The text of the new statement is provided below and updates the Interdependence 7th Principle:
Interdependence. We honor the interdependent web of all existence. With reverence for the great web of life and with humility, we acknowledge our place in it.
We covenant to protect Earth and all beings from exploitation. We will create and nurture sustainable relationships of care and respect, mutuality and justice. We will work to repair harm and damaged relationships.
-Article II, Unitarian Universalist Association Bylaws
By creating this guide, UUAM seeks to encourage thoughtful discussion within your congregation of the potential implications of this new UU covenant. The guide provides a possible starting place for such discussion. It contains questions for your group to discuss in an open, creative, and supportive setting using the Small Group Ministry format. UUAM hopes you will find this guide of value as you delve into these crucial issues in our quest for justice for all beings.
Audience: We recommend small groups of between three and twelve Unitarian Universalists and others (Consider including: UUAM chapters, social justice circles, Green Sanctuary/Ministry for Earth teams, and all other congregants, as well as clergy, religious educators, and other religious professionals).
Duration/Format: Approximately 1 - 1.5 hours. Embracing Interdependence may be conducted in more than one session if desired (see pages 7 & 8). We highly recommend that the discussion be facilitated by a moderator.
Blessings to you and your congregation as you embrace interdependence!
